Dr Susan Cork is currently a Professor and Head of the Department of Ecosystem and Public Health at the University of Calgary's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Susan was born in England but spent 12 years in New Zealand before returning to practice veterinary medicine in 1987. She arrived in Canada in September 2008 to join a talented team set with the task of developing Calgary's new veterinary program. Her research interests include Public Health and Wildlife Disease Ecology.

Aside from developing her teaching and research portfolio she has been enjoying the fabulous scenery and wildlife in and around the Rockies. Prior to arriving in Canada, Susan spent 5 years in Wellington, New Zealand where she held a number of management and policy positions in the Ministry of Agriculture.

Dr Susan Cork holds a degree in Veterinary Science (1986) and a PhD (1994) from Massey University in New Zealand. She also obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Policy at Victoria University's School of Government (2006). She has worked in academic and government roles in a number of countries including New Zealand, England, Scotland, Wales, Fiji and Bhutan and has published a number of peer reviewed publications as well as book chapters on Animal and Public Health related topics.

During her time in Bhutan (1995-1997) she helped set up a veterinary diagnostic laboratory and animal health surveillance program. This was a very rewarding experience in which she worked alongside Bhutanese veterinarians and field staff to deliver veterinary services to remote villages. Bhutan is nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas and it is here that she developed a keen interest in Buddhist philosophy. Since that time she has studied Eastern traditions and culture and continues to contribute to International Development projects.
