Major Herold was born and raised in Toronto. Graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree from University of Western Ontario in 1975, he enlisted in the Canadian Army.

Following initial training, Major Herold spent two years at Canadian Forces Base Trenton, Ontario, first with as a transportation safety officer and then with 2 Air Movement Unit as the Operations Officer. In 1979, Major Herold was posted to the Canadian Airborne Regiment.

During the period 1980 - 82, Major Herold served as a reservist with 22 (London) Service Battalion.

Major Herold returned to the Regular Force in 1982 and was again posted to Canadian Forces Base Petawawa, first with the Special Service Headquarters and then with 2 Service Battalion, a logistics unit. In 1986, he was posted to 25 (Toronto) Service Battalion, followed by a tour with Toronto Militia District Headquarters.

In 1991, Major Herold went to England for post-graduate training while attached to the British Army. On his return to Canada in 1992, he served at a Canadian Forces ammunition depot in Dundurn, near Saskatoon. In 1995, he was posted as the Ammunition Technical Officer and Officer Commanding 17 Explosive Ordnance Disposal Centre in Wainwright, Alberta. In 1999, Major Herold was posted to 21 (Windsor) Service Battalion in Ontario and in 2004, to Area Support Unit Calgary as the Deputy Commanding Officer.

Major Herold served as the Officer in Command, Tri-National Ammunition Supply Point in Kandahar, Afghanistan in 2006. On his return, he was posted to 41 Canadian Brigade Group Headquarters in Calgary.

Major Herold is a graduate of the Canadian Land Force Command and Staff College in Kingston, Ontario.

Major Herold has three grown children and is utterly in love with his wife, Carolyn Foard.
